It’s been just over a month since it was reported that Colin Farrell would star in the DCU’s Sgt. Rock movie from Luca Guadagnino, but now things have come to a screeching halt. THR is reporting that Sgt. Rock is no longer moving forward before it ever began production. James Gunn mentioned during a DC event earlier this year with Collider in attendance that there had been some trouble getting the project off the ground. THR also included in their report that Mike Faist, who previously starred in Challengers for Guadagnino, was also in talks to star in the project. It was in pre-production in England and was planning to begin shooting this summer. It’s unclear at the time why the project was scrapped, but it’s the first under Gunn to receive the ax.
Before Colin Farrell signed on for Sgt. Rock, it was Daniel Craig who was previously attached to star in the film. Craig previously worked with Guadagnino on Queer, the A24 romantic period drama currently streaming on Max. Based on the comic books by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, Justin Kuritzkes was tapped to write the screenplay for Sgt. Rock. He made his screenwriting debut on Challengers and followed that up with Queer, and he’s also attached to Austin Butler’s new City on Fire project. The film was going to be a WWII action film following Frank Rock, leader of an infantry unit, through various battles across Europe. James Gunn or his DC Studios co-CEO, Peter Safran, has not weighed in on the project’s cancellation, but Gunn’s got a track record with transparency, so it likely won’t be long before he breaks his silence.
There Are Still Plenty of DCU Projects To Be Excited About
Sgt. Rock may no longer be in development, but fans still have other projects like Superman to look forward to. The first DCU film will be released in just a few months on July 11, and it will introduce the world to David Corenswet as the new Clark Kent. Coming on the slate after Superman is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which stars Milly Alcock as the titular character and Jason Momoa as Lobo. DC Studios is also in the middle of production on a Lanterns Max series starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, and there’s a Clayface movie coming on September 11, 2026.
