‘King of the Hill’ Reboot Sets August Release Date!!

Get ready to return to Arlen this summer. Hulu has announced when their long-awaited reboot of Mike Judge‘s animated sitcom King of the Hill will premiere, and also offered a tease of the new season’s plotlines and the series’ revised opening sequence. Hank, Peggy, and Bobby will return on August 4 for King of the Hill‘s ten-episode fourteenth season.

In the new intro, we see an older and greyer Hank (Judge) and Peggy Hill (Kathy Najimy), as well as their son Bobby (Pamela Adlon), who is now in his twenties. A rapid-fire montage sees the Hills move out of their longtime home base in Arlen, Texas, to Saudi Arabia, where they grew their nest egg. As the years passed, Hank’s friends Dale Gribble (the late Johnny Hardwick), Bill Dauterive (Stephen Root) and Boomhauer (Judge) added the new resident of Hank’s house to their group; also, Dale ran (successfully?) for mayor of Arlen. Now, the Hills have returned to a changed Arlen, and have begun to rebuild their old lives. Meanwhile, Bobby has moved to Dallas, where he’s living his best life as a chef with old friends Joseph Gribble (Breckin Meyer), Connie Souphanousinphone (Lauren Tom), and Chane Wassanasong (Adlon). We also catch glimpses of the Hill’s neighbors, including Connie’s parents, Kahn and Minh; Dale’s wife, Nancy; and Joseph’s secret father John Redcorn.

What Is ‘King of the Hill’ About?

Created by Beavis and Butt-Head‘s Judge and The SimpsonsGreg Daniels in 1997, King of the Hill centered around the suburban Texas life of propane salesman and enthusiast Hank Hill, his wife, substitute Spanish teacher Peggy, their sweet-natured son Bobby, and Peggy’s emotional niece Luanne (the late Brittany Murphy). Hank attempted to navigate the changing times of the 1990s and 2000s while maintaining his Texan traditions, and also tried to raise his son with a gentle but firm hand, wanting to avoid replicating his harsh upbringing at the hands of irascible, shin-less veteran Cotton Hill (Toby Huss). The series was a hit with critics and with viewers, but like many of Fox’s Sunday-night animated series, it struggled with constant pre-emptions due to the network’s NFL coverage. It ran for 259 episodes and 13 seasons before making its final bow in 2009.

The King of the Hill reboot is executive produced by original co-creators Judge and Daniels, as well as Saladin Patterson (Psych), who will showrun the new series. 3 ArtsMichael Rotenberg and Howard Klein, and Bandera Entertainment’s Dustin Davis, will also executive produce.

King of the Hill‘s fourteenth season will premiere on Hulu on August 4.
