‘Transformers One’ Director Confirms Sequel Won’t Be Made!!

The world of the Transformers is a globally recognized franchise, so when Paramount decided to make the animated prequel movie, Transformers One, it stood to reason that the movie would perform well at the box office. Despite scores of 89% from critics and 97% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie ultimately didn’t live up to the billing. As a result, Paramount won’t be rolling out a Transformers One sequel even though the film’s director, Josh Cooley, confirms that he has plans for future installments of the animated prequel movie.

Cooley‘s work saw Energon miners Orion Pax (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry) transformed into Optimus Prime and Megatron, the rival leaders of the warring Autobots and Decepticons. Theirs is a rivalry that ensues after teaming up to save Cybertron from the traitorous Sentinel Prime (Jon Hamm) and the Quintessons. Sadly, Cooley will not get to pursue his vision any further. “I wish I had something to announce, but I do not. What I’ve been told is that Paramount Animation is not interested in making a sequel,” Cooley revealed regarding a potential Transformers Two during a panel at the Transformers‘ convention BotCon this past weekend. “That’s what I was told. I wish we could,” the director continued. “I have ideas, too. So it would have been cool. We’ll see what happens. You never know.Cooley‘s announcement was one met with boos and groans from attendees.

‘Transformers One’ Rolled Onto Streaming to Redeem Itself

Transformers One opened to an excellent response from both audiences and critics. “Dramatically satisfying with a dash of good humor, Transformers One suggests that animation might be the optimal medium for this oft-adapted franchise.” In his review, Collider‘s Jeff Ewing described the movie as “a fun, action-packed outing with surprisingly effective emotional resonance.” However, when the movie arrived the box office, it struggled to perform. That time period saw animated movies like Inside Out 2 and Moana 2 both crack the $1 billion mark worldwide, and others like Despicable Me 4 and Mufasa: The Lion King seriously impress at the box office.

Transformers One, on the other hand, opened with $24.6 million at the domestic box office when it rolled into theaters last September. The animated movie ultimately finished its nine-week run at the box office with $59.1 million domestically and $69.2 million internationally for a global total of $129 million. The movie has since begun redeeming itself on the Paramount+ streaming charts.

Cooley directs the film, with Eric Pearson, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari all credited with penning the screenplay for Transformers One. Besides Hemsworth, Hamm and Henry, the animated movie also features voice roles for Keegan-Michael Key as B-127/Bumblebee, Scarlett Johansson as Commander Elita-1, Jason Konopisos-Alvarez as Shockwave, Jon Bailey as Soundwave, Steve Buscemi as Starscream, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion.
