Coyote Ugly took a beating from critics when it first hit theaters in the summer of 2000, but over time, the comedy-drama found new life as a cult favorite, thanks to the fans who embraced its feel-good charm and iconic soundtrack. In a time when revivals and sequels to beloved classics are all the rage, it’s somewhat surprising that Coyote Ugly hasn’t yet gotten the same treatment, especially with Tyra Banks, one of its stars, championing the idea for years. That, however, might soon change as a recent update from producer Jerry Bruckheimer teases that we might be headed for another wild night at the legendary bar.
Bruckheimer has lately been out and about promoting his recent production effort with Warner Bros. — F1, a high-octane racing film starring Brad Pitt. One of those promotion rounds saw him catch up with ScreenRant for a brief chat, where the outlet stole the opportunity to ask about the possibility of revisiting Coyote Ugly. His response was quite positive, as the acclaimed filmmaker not only seemed enthusiastic about the idea of a sequel but also revealed that there had previously been attempts to turn the film into a television series. Although those plans never quite came together, Bruckheimer is open to getting things started again to bring the long-anticipated sequel to fruition. “Ah, that’s a good idea. Thanks for that,” he said, adding, “We’ve been trying to do it for television. It hasn’t quite happened yet — maybe we’ll get it together.”
The Original ‘Coyote Ugly’ Stars Are Down for a Sequel
One of the usual hurdles in revisiting a cult classic is reuniting the original cast and securing their interest in a follow-up. Fortunately for Coyote Ugly, that won’t be an issue. The entire cast has shown nothing but excitement about the idea of a sequel, and they’ve even tossed around ideas about where the story could go next.
The stars recently reunited to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary at a charity event organized by Banks. Joining her were co-stars Melanie Lynskey, Maria Bello, and Izabella Miko, all of whom expressed support for a sequel in interviews with E! News. Lynskey called the idea “super fun,” while Miko, who played Cammie, was especially vocal. “I feel like the world needs a sequel of Coyote Ugly,” she said. “I think if the fans come together and say, ‘Hey, we want, we need it,’ we can make it happen.”
Miko even offered a quirky update on where Cammie could be today, adding, “She just went to Colombia, did ayahuasca, decided to come back and open up an IV-drip bar right next to Coyote Ugly.” Clearly, the cast isn’t short on creativity or passion for returning to the bar that started it all, but how or when that will materialize remains to be seen. While we wait to see what Bruckheimer comes up with regarding the sequel, you can check out his latest project, F1, set to arrive in theaters on June 27.
