Although Invincible fans are still waiting for a release date for Season 4 and recovering from the insane ending to Season 3, the series has gotten a big, if somewhat expected, update. Prime Video announced that Robert Kirkman‘s bloody superhero story is officially coming back for Season 5, bringing the creator one step closer to an eight-season adaptation of his original comic book. Alongside the renewal came a fun behind-the-scenes video showing the cast, led by Steven Yeun, back in the booth and having a blast while recording. It also confirms that all the voice work is already done, teeing up another relatively quick return after Season 4 closes.
“Season f—ing five. You know what that’s called? A success,” Walton Goggins opens the video with, touting the universal acclaim Invincible has had so far. It’s rare that a streaming series, let alone an animated one, reaches five seasons nowadays, but the story of Mark Grayson has been an altogether different beast so far. Through three seasons, the series has an overall Rotten Tomatoes score of 99% from critics and 91% from audiences, all while earning Emmy nominations and plenty of other awards buzz. Season 3 took the show to even greater heights, too, becoming the most-watched season of animation ever on Prime Video and the biggest returning season ever among the platform’s adult animation originals. Complete with an eye-watering list of stars, Invincible has cemented itself as one of the streamer’s tentpole series.
Speaking of stars, the renewal video highlights the mainstays of the series, from Yeun and Goggins to J.K. Simmons, Gillian Jacobs, Jay Pharoah, Seth Rogen, Ben Schwartz, and Sandra Oh, the latter of whom indulges in epically saying the show’s name. Alongside the returning faces, it highlights one newcomer to the booth — Emmy winner Matthew Rhys. The star of A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood will suit up for the upcoming season in an unknown role that will be revealed at a later date. He adds even more award pedigree to a cast that has also featured the talents of Jason Mantzoukas, Zazie Beetz, Grey DeLisle, Zachary Quinto, Chris Diamantopoulos, Ross Marquand, Khary Payton, Andrew Rannells, Kevin Michael Richardson, Clancy Brown, Mark Hamill, and Melise Jow, among many others.
What to Expect From ‘Invincible’ Season 4
Invincible has been following the journey of 17-year-old Mark Grayson (Yeun) as he tries to follow in his father Omni-Man’s (Simmons) superheroic footsteps, only to find that his dad isn’t the hero he thought and being a protector of Earth is a lot more complicated than it looks. Season 3 ended things with a bang between the Invincible War laying waste to the planet and the arrival of Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to take Earth for the Viltrum Empire. With the assistance of Atom Eve (Jacobs), Mark narrowly managed to beat the all-powerful conqueror, but unbeknownst to him, Cecil Stedman (Goggins) and the GDA whisked Conquest away, hoping to interrogate him about the Viltrumites once he heals. The globe’s finest heroes will need every advantage they can get in the coming war, but it’s far from the only thing to worry about. Mark is heading down a dark path, telling his half-brother Oliver (Christian Convery) that he’s done with his no-kill rule and setting up some defining stories for the hero as past threats like the Sequids resurface. Intriguingly, the final scene of the demon detective Damian Darkblood (Brown) in Hell also hints at a new show-exclusive storyline to come.
