As Superman continues to dominate at the box office, another long-rumored DCU project just got a vital update. Deadline reports that David Jenkins, creator of HBO’s now-canceled Our Flag Means Death series, has boarded Booster Gold to write the pilot. Deadline also reports that Jenkins is the preferred showrunner for Booster Gold, but that deal has yet to be signed. This comes after The Penguin earned a stunning 24 nominations from the Television Academy last week, which certainly didn’t dissuade HBO Max from pushing for another series. When DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced the project years ago, all he said was that the hero would “use future technology to pretend to be a superhero in the present day.” No word yet about casting or when production will begin.
Glen Powell has been the most popular fan cast for Booster Gold since the project was announced, but he hasn’t expressed any interest in taking on the role despite being the obvious fan-favorite. Some fans have also pushed for Chris Pratt to take on the role of Booster Gold, and Pratt does have a history with Gunn — he featured as Star Lord in all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies for the director. Given everything James Gunn has laid out about the DCU, fans can rest assured that casting won’t be announced until the project is ready to go into production. Gunn is adamant about not pushing any project, no matter how big, out of development and into production until a great script is fully complete. Casting likely won’t begin until Jenkins nails down a starting point for Booster Gold and potentially signs on for the full series.
James Gunn’s DCU Is Already Off and Running
It’s unclear if Booster Gold will be more connected to the rest of the DCU or largely separate from it like Clayface, but the universe is already beginning to take shape now that the first couple of projects have been released. The DCU officially began last year with the release of Creature Commandos, and it continued just a few weeks ago when Superman flew into theaters everywhere. The next DCU project coming to the big screen is Supergirl, which features Milly Alcock, who can also be seen with a brief cameo in Superman. Another live-action HBO Max series to look out for is Lanterns, which stars Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler.
