Terminator creator, James Cameron, has finally provided an update about the franchise’s next project, and fans won’t be too pleased. As you may know, a reboot has since been in the works, spearheaded by the prolific director who, in May 2023, was said to have been developing a script. Sadly, he hasn’t made it very far on said script as he’s currently dealing with a major case of writer’s block.
Appearing on CNN to discuss nuclear weapons with anchor Christiane Amanpour, the prominent filmmaker touched on what drove him to write about nuclear Armageddon back in 1984 with the first ever Terminator. Amid the conversation, as seen on X (formerly Twitter), he spoke of the progress of the Terminator reboot, or lack thereof, admitting that the current real-life threat of nuclear war has hindered his efforts to write new installments. That, of course, includes the complete film series reboot he has mentioned in recent years.
“I’m at a point right now where I have a hard time writing science fiction. I’m tasked with writing a new Terminator story. I’ve been unable to get started on that very far, because I don’t know what to say that won’t get overtaken by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now, and the only way out is through — by using our intelligence, by using our curiosity, by using our command of technology — but also by really understanding the stark probabilities that we face.”
The ‘Terminator’ Reboot Won’t Launch Any Time Soon
Since 2019, the Terminator film series has been on hold mainly due to the underwhelming performance of Terminator: Dark Fate. Following the failure, franchise favorites Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton said they weren’t interested in reprising their roles again. Cameron, on the other hand, first mentioned the idea of a reboot in December 2022, but nothing concrete was decided at the time. He also hinted that the new film would focus more on artificial intelligence rather than “bad robots gone crazy.” The award-winning director further spoke of his plans for the upcoming Terminator entry in September 2024, saying he intended to start the franchise over with the origin story nearly unchanged, but the “distinct iconography” of the franchise completely overhauled. Cameron was pretty confident at the time, but we can all agree that his recent update is not so promising. Nevertheless, fans can still hope.
