It’s been nearly two years since Mizu (Maya Erskine) began her quest for vengeance, but we finally have our first look at the second season of Blue Eye Samurai. Netflix shared a breathtaking new poster for Season 2 of the acclaimed animated hit, showing the mixed-race sword master standing on the front of a ship and looking out to distant lands barely visible through the fog. She’s now crossed the ocean in search of the remainder of the four men, including, potentially, her father, though it’ll still be a while before her story continues. The poster was just a small teaser confirming that its next run is now in production.
A historical epic set in 17th-century Japan, Blue Eye Samurai Season 1 kicked off Mizu’s journey to find the man who abandoned her and took her mother from her by rooting out the four white men who had illegally remained within the country’s borders after their closing. To do so, she took up the guise of a man and wielded her blade against her enemies, carving a path through the country on the way to finding one of those men, the Irish smuggler Abijah Fowler (Kenneth Branagh). It was only the first chapter of the story of identity, revenge, and purpose, though. At the end of the season, Fowler exposes the location of the other two men in London, England, convincing her to keep him alive in order to use his connections and commandeer a ship overseas. The poster hints at her arrival, which will expand the show’s world in a big way and create new challenges for the so-far unrivaled swordswoman.
Blue Eye Samurai tells more stories than just that of Mizu in London, though. Season 2 will also feature the rest of the people around her all seeking their next steps as well. After being married off to the Shogun’s younger son, Akemi (Brenda Song) is now in a position of great power that she intends to manipulate, finding autonomy through playing a long, strategic political game. Taigen (Darren Barnet), meanwhile, will seek a new purpose with his love now gone and his duel with Mizu unresolved, and Ringo (Masi Oka) will try to find greatness in a new way. With so many stories unfolding and Mizu’s just beginning, it’s understandable why series creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi have targeted a three-to-four-season run for the show.
‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Returns With a Bolstered Creative Team
Much of the same cast will stick around heading into Season 2, with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, George Takei, Ming-Na Wen, and Harry Shum Jr. among the other stars likely to return. New additions have yet to be announced, but the series will have at least one notable newcomer on the creative end. After working on the acclaimed Ultraman Rising for Netflix, John Aoshima has come aboard to helm the next steps in Mizu’s journey. Thanks to the animation quality and general time-consuming nature of the medium, though, his and the Blue Eye Samurai team’s work won’t be seen until 2026 at the earliest, according to the creators. The wait may be more than worth it, considering Season 1’s near-universal acclaim with a Certified Fresh 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the meantime, the first season of Blue Eye Samurai is available to stream in its entirety on Netflix. Check out the first Season 2 poster above.
