Netflix is hosting a True Detective reunion, and a Yellowstone star has just joined the fun. Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser will star in a new series at the streamer created by Nic Pizzolatto. McConaughey starred in the first season of True Detective, which was created by Pizzolatto; True Detective‘s disturbed ex-cop Rust Cohle remains one of McConaughey‘s most iconic roles.
According to reports, the untitled series is being referred to internally as “The Brothers Project,” as McConaughey and Hauser, who both starred in 1993’s Dazed and Confused, will play a pair of siblings. Everything else about the series is being kept under wraps for now, although as it will be produced by Skydance Sports, the plot will presumably revolve around sports in some fashion. The series was a hot commodity, and was the subject of a bidding war between Netflix, Apple, and Amazon. Interestingly, both actors have been connected to Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone family of shows on Paramount+. Hauser starred on the series as Rip Wheeler, and is set to headline a spin-off, The Dutton Ranch, with fellow Yellowstone alum Kelly Reilly. McConaughey, meanwhile, had another spin-off series in development when Kevin Costner made his momentous decision to depart the series; it is unclear if it is still in development.
What Has Matthew McConaughey Been Working On Lately?
Recently, McConaughey has taken a sabbatical from on-screen work; his last big-screen role came in 2019’s The Gentlemen. Since then, he’s voiced a character in the animated Sing 2, narrated the documentary Deep in the Heart: A Texas Wildlife Story, and made a voice cameo as Cowboypool in last year’s superhero crossover blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. However, he’s set to return to theaters this fall in The Lost Bus, Paul Greengrass‘ new thriller about the deadly 2018 wildfire in California’s Butte County; he’ll play a bus driver who has to steer a school bus filled with schoolchildren and their teacher (America Ferrera) through a raging inferno. He’s also starring in the thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, the sophomore feature from The Vast of Night‘s Andrew Patterson.
McConaughey is also set to star in another project that serves as a True Detective reunion. He’ll star with Marty Hart himself, Woody Harrelson, in the new Apple TV+ series Brothers. The duo will play fictionalized versions of themselves who decide to move in with each other, bringing their own families (including Holland Taylor, Natalie Martinez, and Brittany Ishibashi) together.
