‘The Hack’ Trailer Sees David Tennant Investigate the UK’s Biggest Newspaper Scandal!! Check It Out!!

Doctor Who fan-favorite David Tennant is back in an all-new teaser for his next project, The Hack, from Adolescence scribe Jack Thorne. The Hack is inspired by real-life events, exploring the infamous News International phone hacking scandal involving employees of the now-defunct News of the World newspaper, which began in the 1990s and continued until its shutdown in 2011.

In The Hack trailer below, Tennant’s character, an investigative journalist, can be heard saying in a voice-over, “My name is Nick Davies and this is a story that ends in seven major police investigations, nearly 40 convictions and some of the most powerful people in this country being brought to their knees.” The clip also shows glimpses of Davies’ investigation and the web of lies he uncovers, with scenes that suggest the danger it poses to those investigating allegations of phone hacking and corruption.

A few may recall that the News of the World was shut down after investigators found that employees had been involved in not just phone hacking, but also police bribery and exercising improper influence in the pursuit of stories. Investigations conducted between 2005 and 2007 revealed that the paper’s phone-hacking activities primarily targeted celebrities, politicians, and members of the British royal family.

Tennant, the teaser for The Hack shows co-star Toby Jones, who portrays Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger, alongside Adrian Lester and Robert Carlyle. Others starring in the true crime drama include Steve Pemberton, Dougray Scott, and Eve Myles, who portray media mogul Rupert Murdoch, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and TV presenter Jacqui Hames, respectively. Rose Leslie, Katherine Kelly, Kevin Doyle, Neil Maskell, Lara Pulver, Lee Ingleby, Pip Torrens, Lisa McGrillis, and Sean Pertwee also star.
