FX has finally reached a verdict on the future of Alien: Earth following the explosive Season 1 finale. The studio has confirmed that Alien: Earth has been renewed and will move forward with another season, with creator Noah Hawley signing an overall deal with FX and Disney. Additionally, the hit show’s second season already has a filming window, with production expected to begin in London starting next year. This comes as little shock to those who have been following along with Season 1, especially given the cliffhanger ending clearly designed to set up another season. Now that Wendy (Sydney Chandler) and the other synthetic children have taken over, they’re the ones who are going to have to defend the Prodigy island compound from Yutani and her soldiers in Season 2.
In response to his ongoing collaborations with FX for the newly announced second season, Hawley responded with the following statement:
“I’m thrilled that this expanded deal opens the door to new opportunities across all of Disney Entertainment Television. FX has always supported bold, character-driven storytelling. From the very beginning with Fargo, they’ve encouraged me to take creative risks and follow the story wherever it leads. I’m grateful to continue exploring the world of Alien: Earth alongside our partners, cast, and crew as we begin the next chapter.”
The reception of Alien: Earth makes it even less surprising that the show has been picked up for another season. The series currently boasts a near-flawless 95% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70% rating on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It has also been a mainstay in the Disney+ and Hulu top 10 since its premiere, delivering strong viewership for several months after its initial debut. The series is set two years before the original Alien movie, and it follows a group of children placed in synthetic bodies as they study alien species and learn what it means to be adults.
Ridley Scott is involved with Alien: Earth as a producer, but the show was written and created for television by acclaimed scribe Noah Hawley. Hawley is best known for his work on Fargo, but he also wrote and created all 27 episodes of Legion, which is also streaming on Hulu. Hawley even directed and penned the script for Lucy in the Sky, the romantic thriller starring Natalie Portman and Jon Hamm.
What Is ‘Alien: Earth’ Season 2 Going To Look Like?
While plot details about Alien: Earth Season 2 have yet to be released, the Season 1 finale gave us an idea of where the series is heading. It falls to the kids to defend the island, with the help of the Xenomorph, but they’re surely going to need some strategic advice. This is likely why other islanders, such as Dame Sylvia (Essie Davis), Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin), Morrow (Babou Ceesay), Atom Eins (Adrian Edmondson), and Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant) were kept alive and being held captive. David Rysdahl’s Arthur Sylvia can also be expected back in Season 2, now that he’s being controlled by the mysterious eye-shaped alien. The renewal of Alien: Earth also comes on the heels of the release of Predator: Badlands, which has since become one of the best-reviewed and highest-grossing movies in the franchise, and introduced Weyland-Yutani to the wider Predator universe.
