HBO’s first original medical drama, and also one of its best shows in years, is finally coming back next month. HBO Max has released the opening scene from The Pitt Season 2 ahead of the show’s January 8 release date. The new footage shows Dr. Robbie (Noah Wyle) riding a motorcycle into work, and it concludes with the signature opening card fans of Season 1 will recognize, “Hour One: 7:00 am – 8:00 am. July 4th.” This opening scene spends more time outside the hospital than almost the entirety of Season 1, which has fans questioning how much of Pittsburgh we’ll see in The Pitt Season 2.
The first season of The Pitt follows a day in the life of medical professionals at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The show took an unorthodox approach, juxtaposed to other medical dramas like Grey’s Anatomy and New Amsterdam. The first season of The Pitt consisted of 15 episodes, and the entire season took place over one full shift in the ER at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, with each episode covering approximately one hour. Season 2 will continue this same model, but there will be a time jump forward to Fourth of July weekend, which will certainly open the door to some unique injuries.
The Pitt Season 1 earned widespread critical acclaim, which included a 95% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and even an 86% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Leading star Noah Wyle also picked up an Emmy for his performance as Dr. Robbie in the first season, along with Supporting Actress Katherine LaNasa and Guest Actor Shawn Hatosy. All three Emmy-winners are coming back in Season 2.
Will There Be a Third Season of ‘The Pitt’?
Although The Pitt has yet to be officially renewed for a third season, it would be a surprise to see it close up shop after only two seasons. HBO Max boss Casey Bloys has said that he wants to see the show become HBO’s Grey’s Anatomy, in that it’s a flagship property for over 20 years. However, Netflix’s recent acquisition of Warner Bros. has fans questioning the future of shows like The Pitt, which found success largely due to being released weekly over the course of several months. If The Pitt was moved to a binge release like most Netflix shows are, its model likely wouldn’t be as effective.
