The Extraction series has been one of Netflix‘s biggest hits, so it’s no surprise to find out the streamer wants to keep doubling down on it, and their latest play has come with the first behind-the-scenes look at Mercenary: An Extraction Series, confirming that production is well underway — and that the next chapter of the action universe won’t revolve around Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake. Instead, the spotlight shifts to Omar Sy, who leads the new eight-episode series set in the same brutal, high-stakes world that made Extraction one of Netflix’s biggest action properties.
Alongside Sy, the cast also features Boyd Holbrook, Natalie Dormer, Waleed Zuaiter, Ed Speleers, Sacha Dhawan, Ross McCall, Pip Torrens, Sam Woolf, Michael Zananiri, Riyad Sliman, Muhannad Ben Amor, Aaron Heffernan, Jojo Macari, Theo Ogundipe and Emma Appleton.
The series is being overseen by Glen Mazzara (The Shield, The Walking Dead), who serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, while the directing duties are split evenly between Louise Hooper (The Rings of Power, The Sandman) and Tim Southam (Foundation, One Piece), each taking on half of the season’s eight episodes, while both also executive produce their respective installments. Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi executive produce for AGBO, alongside Sam Hargrave, Eric Gitter, and Peter Schwerin.
Netflix’s official logline is as follows:
In this action-packed thriller, a mercenary (Omar Sy) embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, he must navigate life-or-death choices while confronting deep emotional wounds.
Not only that, but the Extraction franchise will be heading to South Korea with the new action thriller film TYGO, starring Don Lee, Lee Jin-uk, and BLACKPINK’s Lalisa ‘LISA’ Manobal.
What Can We Expect from ‘Extraction 3’?
Of course, the main films will continue too, as long as Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave are keen to keep going. 2023’s Extraction 2 introduced Idris Elba to the fray, and according to Hargrave, we’ll be seeing a lot more of him when the third installment comes into town.
Elba’s role was deliberately ambiguous in the 2023 sequel, but the creative team made it clear he wasn’t just a one-and-done cameo. Hargrave has previously explained (speaking last year) that Elba’s arrival was meant to challenge Rake in new ways and open the door to expanding the Extraction franchise beyond Hemsworth.
“We were very interested in the potential of expanding the Extraction universe and also wanting to surround Tyler Rake with really charismatic and unique actors who challenge him in different ways. That character really does bring out a different side to Tyler Rake… And putting those two on screen together, that chemistry is very palpable.”
Extraction 2 is streaming now on Netflix. Mercenary is currently in production now.
