What Do We Know About Netflix’s ‘Assassin’s Creed’?
Netflix is keeping any plot details about the series under a cloak of darkness so far, but presumably it will follow the general plot of the video game franchise; it centers around two ancient secret societies, the Templars, who seek to guide humanity towards order, and the Assassins, who want to preserve human freedom. The Templars employ the Animus, a high-tech device that projects a subject’s mind into the body of an ancestor; they hope to use this to help them seek the powerful artifacts that will allow them to guide humanity’s destiny. It was previously adapted into a feature film in 2016; directed by Justin Kurzel (The Order) and starring Michael Fassbender, it was a critical and commercial disappointment, which forestalled a planned big-screen franchise and resulted in a pivot to the small screen. In addition to Marcus, the Netflix series will also star Toby Wallace (The Bikeriders), Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing), and Zachary Hart (Slow Horses). The first season of the series, at least, will be filmed in and set in Italy; however, we do not know what time period the series will take place in, as the franchise spans from Ancient Greece to the modern day.
Assassin’s Creed will be showrun by Roberto Patino (Westworld) and David Wiener (Halo). They will also executive produce with Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, Genevieve Jones for Ubisoft Film & Television, and Matt O’Toole.
Netflix‘s Assassin’s Creed series will begin production next year in Italy; no release date has yet been announced.
