Henry Cavill is not easing into immortality. Production is officially underway in London on the long-anticipated Highlander reboot, directed by Chad Stahelski, and the latest set photos show Cavill’s Connor MacLeod looking like he’s already survived one brutal round of “The Game.” Stahelski previously told The Direct how he sold Cavill on the project, saying:
“My selling point was, to [Henry Cavill], look, you’ve got a guy that’s been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world that wanted to be in this situation. So you get to cover quite a broad spread of a character arc there. And you get to experience someone that’s trained over 500 years and sort of played [with many types of] martial arts.”
In the images, Cavill is seen wearing a long leather coat, blood pouring down the side of his head, as he prepares to ride off on a motorcycle. If you’ve brushed up on your Highlander lore, you know what that likely means: things are escalating fast between him and Dave Bautista’s Kurgan. Previous photos have already teased Cavill opposite Bautista, who plays the villainous Kurgan — or Victor Kruger in modern times. In the original 1986 film, MacLeod and the Kurgan are the final two immortals standing, and their confrontation only happens at the very end. If this reboot is already staging bloody encounters, Stahelski might be reshuffling the timeline… or simply going harder, sooner.
Who Stars In ‘Highlander’?
Russell Crowe is stepping into the role of Ramirez, MacLeod’s mentor and fellow immortal — a part originally played by Sean Connery in the 1986 classic. Marisa Abela (Industry) takes on the female lead, archaeologist Kate Bennett, while Djimon Hounsou has joined the cast in an undisclosed role (with rumors swirling he could be a new take on Kastagir). The movie will also feature WWE Champion Drew McIntyre as Angus MacLeod, Connor’s brother and chieftain of Clan MacLeod; Karen Gillan as Heather MacLeod, Connor’s first wife; and Jeremy Irons as the leader of The Watchers, fated to observe and record the deeds of the Immortals.
Highlander is set to release in theaters in 2027.
