Prime Video’s God of War adaptation has been gaining momentum over the last few months, after it was stagnant for years. It was first announced in 2022 that a TV adaptation of the popular series was in development, but the details of which game it would start with and who would be at the helm were unclear. After several creative overhauls and some turnover, Prime Video settled on Ronald D. Moore as the lead writer and showrunner for the series. Moore is best known for his work writing For All Mankind and Outlander, so he’s certainly got the required experience. Frederick E.O. Toye, famed for his Emmy-winning work directing Shōgun, has been tapped as the primary director for God of War, and the show has been slowly but surely filling out its cast over the last few weeks.
After years of speculation about who could take over the mantle of Kratos, with fans pegging names like Tom Hardy as the clear favorite, Prime Video settled on Sons of Anarchy veteran Ryan Hurst to voice the God of War. Hurst voiced Thor in the Norse-era God of War video games, so he’s familiar enough with the lore and the perfect choice to play the character. Additional cast members include Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok. Today, however, God of War got its most exciting announcement yet, when Prime Video shared the first look at Hurst and Vinson as Kratos and Atreus, confirming that the show is now in production.
Will ‘God of War’ Show Any Greek Stories?
It was a controversial decision when it was reported that Prime Video’s God of War series would completely skip the Greek era of games and go straight into the Norse story, which kicked off with 2018’s Game of the Year-winner, God of War. While it does make sense, considering the modern games are more narratively rich, long-time God of War fans remain hopeful that the show will still pay homage to Kratos’ Greek roots with flashbacks. Prime Video has yet to announce an official release date.
