Legal thrillers are slowly making a comeback after a great run in the 2010s, with hits like Suits, How to Get Away with Murder, and White Collar. While the genre has worked well for cable and broadcast networks, streaming services are working to develop something that fits their model, with Netflix already ahead of the curve. The streamer’s adaptation of Michael Connelly‘s The Lincoln Lawyer book series has been a great success, becoming one of the streamer’s most popular shows. The legal drama of the same name starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo has four seasons under its belt, with a fifth and final one in the works.
Elsewhere, Hulu is also developing its own legal drama but with a darker twist. Titled Conviction (not to be mistaken with the numerous other similarly named titles), the series is based on Jack Jordan‘s book of the same name published in 2023. It is created by House and The Good Doctor creator David Shore, with The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss returning to Hulu to lead the series. The drama has cast numerous actors, including Jimi Simpson (Westworld), William Jackson Harper (The Good Place), and Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy), among others. A recent Deadline casting report reveals another Hulu homecoming.
After starring in the now-concluded hit series The Bear, Liza Colón-Zayas returns to Hulu with Conviction. Details about her character have not been revealed yet. Colon-Zayas is known for her breakout role in the Jeremy Allen White-led dramedy, which earned her an Emmy for playing Tina, the set-in-her-ways cook in the show’s central restaurant who pushes back against change. However, she later evolves and becomes one of the restaurant’s most important chefs. The actress played the character for four seasons until the series concluded last month.
What Is ‘Conviction’ About?
The series follows criminal defense attorney Neve Harper (played by Moss). She is not quite Mickey Haller yet, but a new case could make her one of the most popular lawyers. Harper exudes confidence, so it’s not hard to take on a controversial high-profile murder where the defendant has been accused of killing his wife by setting their home on fire. Things take a dark turn when Harper finds herself being blackmailed by a stranger, forcing her to compromise everything her career stands for to ensure an acquittal. Why wouldn’t she just say that she’s being blackmailed? Well, the lawyer has some dark secrets that she would wish never came to light. That’s why. Conviction does not have a premiere date yet, but we’ll keep you updated.
