August has been quite a treat for fans of The X-Files thanks to multiple releases, including a free streaming release and, most notably, the highly anticipated The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn. This version is a director’s cut of the divisive 2008 original The X-Files: I Want to Believe, debuting on Hulu today and restoring horror elements that were previously removed.
There’s also Ryan Coogler‘s The X-Files reboot, which still doesn’t have an official premiere date yet despite the pilot episode having wrapped filming and post-production. Either way, while fans keep anticipating, Dynamite Entertainment has some fantastic news. The publishing company, per CBR, has acquired The X-Files comic book license, making it the first time in years that the beloved sci-fi franchise will return to comics.
The first X-Files comic book series was published by Topps Comics and ran for 41 issues from January 1995 to September 1998, coinciding with Seasons 2 through 5 of the TV series. Meanwhile, the last time fans heard of a franchise comics release was when IDW Publishing re-released all the previous Topps comics in collected editions in 2016. Before that, IDW Publishing published The X-Files Season 10 in July 2013 as an ongoing series that reunited Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, with series creator Chris Carter returning as executive producer. This was followed by the eight-issue The X-Files Season 11 in 2015.
What To Know About ‘The X-Files’ Comics
Written by veteran The X-Files comic book writer Joe Harris, who penned the IDW series, the new comics mark the official return of Mulder and Scully. It will also explore previously untold cases that the two FBI agents investigated between episodes of the original TV series.
Speaking about the exciting debut, Harris expressed his delight at collaborating with Dynamite in a press release, calling the opportunity a true honor. The writer also confessed that he has always considered the supernatural franchise “sacred” to him, dating back to his early days of watching the mothership series. “The further adventures of Agents Mulder and Scully have occupied a very special place in my head and career,” he said.
Also speaking about the project, Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher, described The X-Files as “the next jewel in the crown for us at Dynamite in working with Disney and entering 20th Century territories.” According to Barrucci, fans from multiple generations have enjoyed following Mulder and Scully as they investigate mysterious cases, making their stories a natural fit for the serialized format of comic books. He added that he and his team are dedicated to creating stories that will delight both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise.
The new X-Files comics will debut this winter.
