MCU fans have been obsessed with the phrase “Agatha All Along” ever since the song of the same name played in an episode of WandaVision during the reveal that quirky neighbor Agnes was actually Agatha Harkness. Played by Kathryn Hahn, it would be another three years before Agatha would get her own solo series. For seven straight weeks, audiences tucked into the couches, beds, and chairs to watch Agatha All Along on Disney+. Fans traveled down the Witches’ Road during the Halloween season, trying to figure out everything from how Agatha will get her “purple” back, to who Teen is.
Despite this, according to a year-end report by Luminate, Agatha All Along only out-performed one MCU Disney+ series that premiered between 2023 and 2024. Beating out Agatha All Along was Loki Season 2, sitting roughly at 3 billion minutes of watch time in the first 12 weeks of activity. Minutely behind Loki was Secret Invasion, Agatha All Along sits in third, with Echo trailing behind.
Least Watch Doesn’t Mean Least Favorite
There were concerns from the beginning about the potential for Agatha All Along to be review bombed. That would mean a baseless negative rating would be left for the show, before its release, simply for the sake of bringing the average down on a website like the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Not only did Agatha All Along avoid that, but actually ranks highest on Rotten Tomatoes among the four shows Luminate reported on for their year-end report. Agatha All Along currently sits at an 84% Critic’s Score, with an 83% Audience Score. Behind Agatha All Along is Loki Season 2 with 82% for both its Critic’s and Audience scores. Behind Loki Season 2 is Echo, and in last place is Secret Invasion. A common issue with Secret Invasion among fans was that though it helped to further the bigger picture for Marvel, it just fell flat in about every other aspect.
The reason that shows like Agatha All Along and Loki worked so well because they were balanced with the greater MCU storytelling and the character development. Agatha dying at the end of Agatha All Along, not quite redeemed (should she be?) and popping back up as a ghost to guide Billy (Joe Locke), a concept pulled straight from the comics, provides enough to further the narratives for both the MCU at large, as Billy continues to hone his powers as Wiccan (with Agatha’s guidance), find Tommy (with Agatha’s help) and also provide Agatha likely with the closure while the (eventual) Young Avengers are doing their own thing.
All 9 episodes of Agatha All Along are available to stream on Disney+.
