‘The Recruit’: Series Creator Alexi Hawley Teases Wrap Up Movie!!

While The Recruit Season 2 did not end on a massive cliffhanger, it felt like there was still more for the show to explore in Owen Hendricks’ (Noah Centineo) next stage in his life and career. However, the show received devastating news when Netflix opted to pass on a third season. “Is two seasons and a movie a thing? Cause we’d all be there in a heartbeat,” series creator Alexi Hawley said in a statement after the cancellation, inviting the potential of wrapping Owen’s story, even if not how someone would have expected that to happen. “If not, man, we left it all on the field,” he added. Deadline caught up with the prolific multi-hyphenate, where the question about the movie came up. Hawley shared that while he was still passionate about The Recruit, there wasn’t much progress made, saying:

I think it’s still early days on The Recruit side to be talking about a movie or anything. I still am passionate about that world and the story, and would love to revisit at some point with them, but yeah, not at this moment.”

The Recruit stars Centineo as Hendricks, a CIA lawyer whose job puts him in the middle of some of the worst crises in law enforcement. Season 2 found Owen pulled into a life-threatening espionage situation in South Korea, only to realize that the bigger threat just might be coming from inside the Agency. After an eventful trip to Korea, Owen made it out safely, and the season finale left him pondering what’s next for his life. Based on Hawley‘s comments, viewers may or may not know what became of him. Only time will tell.

What Has Alexi Hawley Been Working on After ‘The Recruit?’

Hawley is the creator of ABC‘s hit series, The Rookie, starring Nathan Fillion as John Nolan. It continues to be one of ABC‘s most popular shows and has been renewed for Season 8, to premiere this Fall. Additionally, the network is looking to develop a Washington-based spinoff. “I’ve been going back and there’s a script, I’ve been doing some drafts and getting some notes. You know me, I’m a hopeful person, so I remain hopeful. I mean, it would be a great thing. So let’s see,” Hawley said about how that was coming along. He is also creating another drama series, The Envoy. The show, which was ordered at Hulu, follows a hostage rescue team inspired by Roger Carstens‘ story, which was published in Vanity Fair. Additionally, Hawley has an untitled drama in development at NBC.
