The team behind Wicked: For Good are joining forces for a brand-new featurette that teases the “consequences” of the leading characters’ actions in last year’s Wicked. Hearing from director, Jon M. Chu, and leading ladies, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, audiences are thrown directly back into the green, pink, and magical world of Oz, where Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Grande) find themselves as completely different people than when we bid adieu to them back in November. With returning stars, including Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum coming back to the fold, we can’t wait to see how the wickedly talented team delivers the second half of one of history’s greatest musicals onto the big screen.
As Grande puts it in the featurette, “much has changed” for both witches when audiences pick back up with them in Wicked: For Good. The final sequences of the first movie see both women choosing different paths for themselves, and they’ll come to find that there’s no way to get back to the versions of themselves — or of their friendship — that they once had. Chu describes the production as “a much more mature, emotional journey” than the one that came before it, specifically because of the fallout surrounding the “hard choices” the pair were forced to make in Wicked. Throughout the behind-the-scenes look, we see moments from the movie playing out, including a brief shot of Grande proving that she was simply meant to play the part of Glinda.
In addition to the tale of heartbreak and friends trying to merge their paths back together, there’s also much more lore on the way from Wicked: For Good. Of course, the tale is a prequel to the events of the iconic film, The Wizard of Oz, so audiences are going to eventually come face-to-face with Dorothy Gale and her companions. In fact, as Grande explains, viewers will also learn exactly how the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow “came to be” — with some closer shots added that depict the quartet of travelers.
The Songs of ‘Wicked: For Good’
The first part of the musical film might have had the show’s most famous hit, “Defying Gravity,” but don’t count the second part out just yet. Movements like “As Long As You’re Mine”, “No Good Deed”, and the eponymous “For Good”, will absolutely put audiences in their feels for the star-crossed friends. Meanwhile, the musical’s composer, Stephen Schwartz has also added a number of new tunes to the production that will better fill out the second act.
Check out the behind-the-scenes featurette for Wicked: For Good above and see it in cinemas on November 21.
