With the final film in the Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson-led franchise scaring up copious amounts of dollars at the box office, HBO Max decided it was a good time to keep The Conjuring train moving full speed ahead. We’ve known for quite some time now that a series was set to be in development for the streamer and now, a new report revealed that the project has found its showrunner in Nancy Won, who will also write and executive produce. Won comes with a slew of hits under her belt, having previously worked in the writers’ room behind chart-topping favorites like Supernatural, Tiny Beautiful Things, Little Fires Everywhere, Tiny Beautiful Things, Jessica Jones, and Jericho.
Joining Won in the writers’ room for The Conjuring series are Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires, with Peter Safran joining as an executive producer and James Wan’s Atomic Monster producing. As of right now, the plot is being kept tightly under wraps, but there are quite a few ways that an episodic telling of the real-life paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, could go. The latest film, The Conjuring: Last Rites, focuses much more on the family connections between the spouses and their child, Judy (Mia Tomlinson), as well as Judy’s boyfriend, Tony (Ben Hardy). With these bonds better formed during the fourth and final film in the franchise, there’s a clear pathway for the series to unveil the younger years of the Warrens’ life — although that’s pure speculation and hope!
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s Last Tussle with the Devil
One thing is for (almost) sure and that’s that Farmiga and Wilson won’t be reprising their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren, respectively, for the series. After appearing in four films as the supernatural professionals over the course of more than a decade, the duo are officially hanging up their hats and passing the torch following Last Rites. At the same time, there’s always the chance that a cameo spot could come in some shape or form — after all, Bill Skarsgård said he was done playing It’s Pennywise the Clown, but HBO ultimately got him on board for It: Welcome to Derry, so never say never.
Now, as The Conjuring: Last Rites conjures (sorry, we had to) up heaps of interest from its loyal following, it certainly seems like the perfect time to seize the day and get the ball rolling on a series off shoot that will continue the story in a fresh way.
