The future of Hacks has finally been addressed, and fans may want to brace themselves. On the Emmys red carpet, star Hannah Einbinder confirmed that the acclaimed HBO Max comedy will wrap up with its upcoming fifth season.
“It will feel different,” Einbinder told E! host Heather McMahan. “We’re going to start [filming] next week, and knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet. But I think it’s right, you know? It’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome. Rip it and do it and laugh and cry.”
When McMahan repeated the “rip it” comment, Einbinder doubled down: “You can quote me on that. I’m going on the record on that.”
The show’s creative trio — Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs — have long said from the beginning that they saw Hacks as a five-season story. Still, HBO Max has yet to officially confirm its end date, and also, people always say that things have a finite end date but then they find reasons to keep going. In fact, in a recent Variety interview following the Season 4 finale, Downs teased that their finale plan could require more runway than expected:
“We are now breaking up Season 5, and we have to see how many episodes it will take us to get to where we know we’re going to go. The final scene of the final episode has been in our minds since 2015, and we’re excited to get there. But that may take more episodes than we can fit in the season. So the truth is that we don’t know.”
Is ‘Hacks’ Worth Watching?
Collider‘s review of Season 4 hailed the show’s ambition and plot, even if it didn’t quite stick the landing this time:
For the first time, Hacks can’t quite manage to stick the landing, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that it’s still undeniably one of the best things on television. The relationship between Deborah and Ava has never been more intriguing, and Smart and Einbinder have never been better. It’s also notable that this is a show that’s not afraid to take risks, having blown up their established central dynamic more than once and switched settings entirely. Even if these big swings occasionally don’t pay off, as in the instance of the Season 4 finale, I, for one, am still glad it’s taking them.
Hacks is on HBO Max now.
