It’s always the hope when you’re invested in a TV series that your favorite character gets a happy ending. For your sakes, we hope Cassie Howard wasn’t yours. Across three seasons of Euphoria, Sydney Sweeney turned Cassie into one of HBO’s most chaotic, magnetic and frustrating characters, someone who was utterly addicted to doing the dumbest things. Season 3 may have officially ended the show, but it doesn’t sound like Sweeney is ready to close the book completely
Speaking with Variety after the third and final season of Euphoria, Sweeney admitted she still thinks there is more story left for Cassie. Asked whether she feels satisfied with where the character ended up, Sweeney said,
“I don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied with where Cassie ended up, just because I know there is more to tell of Cassie’s story. But I feel that way about so many of my projects. ‘Everything Sucks!’ was a one-season show that I did when I was 18 years old, and sometimes I wake up and go, I wonder if we could all come back. I don’t think that feeling will ever go away. I’ll always be wondering what Cassie is up to in ‘Euphoria’-verse.”
Obviously it’s not an official spin-off announcement, but Sweeney is probably the biggest star whose character is still alive that would be able to justify a spin-off and, if we’re honest, get one. And given the collapse of her marriage to Nate, and everything else, there’s probably more story to tell, particularly given that Cassie appears to be back at square one. When asked about Cassie’s final scene, where she puts on a brave face for Lexi before looking at a photo of herself and Nate and crying, Sweeney said, “She’s trapped in her own dollhouse. She got everything she seemingly wanted, but she’s back at the same place she started. And Lexi left her there.”
What Happened to Zendaya in ‘Euphoria’?
Sweeney also revealed that she cried while watching Rue’s death in the finale, saying the cast knew Rue would be killed off, but not exactly how it would happen. “We all knew that Rue was going to get killed off — we knew that for a long, long time — but no idea how, when it was going to happen. So when I was watching it with everybody else, it was actually the first time that I even uncovered what was going to happen. It’s crazy, but it was also really neat being able to watch as a viewer and not know what was going to happen. I was crying.”
The cast of Euphoria includes Zendaya (Challengers) as Rue Bennett, Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) as Nate Jacobs, Alexa Demie (Waves) as Maddy Perez, Hunter Schafer (Cuckoo) as Jules Vaughn, Maude Apatow (The King of Staten Island) as Lexi Howard, Storm Reid (The Last of Us) as Gia Bennett, and Colman Domingo (Rustin) as Ali.
Euphoria streams on HBO Max.
