Where they lead, we will eternally follow, it would seem. Nearly 20 years after Gilmore Girls aired its final episode, and more than a decade since we last saw Lorelai and Rory on our screens in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, it’s finally time to return to the magic of Stars Hollow for an exciting new project, and it’s bringing back the people who made the series and the town what it was.
HBO Max has officially announced that an untitled Gilmore Girls documentary is now in production, with Lauren Graham and series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino both confirmed to appear. According to the official synopsis, the documentary will be told from the perspective of Sherman Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino, exploring how the series grew from a modest family drama into a cross-generational television phenomenon, adding:
“The film reveals how the show eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon by unpacking the unique alchemy of the creators, cast, crew and collaborators. The film includes never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and script pages.”
The series originally premiered in 2000 and quickly became a firm favorite for its fast-talking dialogue, its cavalcade of quirky characters, its small town charm and its general sense of cosiness and warmth, while the chemistry between Graham and Alexis Bledel as Lorelai and Rory gave us perhaps the defining mother and daughter on television.

The ensemble cast also featured Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) as Sookie St. James, Scott Patterson (Saw IV) as Luke Danes, Kelly Bishop (Dirty Dancing) as Emily Gilmore, Yanic Truesdale (The Fixer) as Michel Gerard, Keiko Agena (Prodigal Son) as Lane Kim, Jared Padalecki (Supernatural) as Dean Forester, Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us) as Jess Mariano, Matt Czuchry (The Resident) as Logan Huntzberger, and the late Edward Herrmann (The Lost Boys) as Richard Gilmore.
The series returned for a four-part reboot on Netflix in 2015 as the characters returned for a new stage of their lives, following Rory’s departure to become a journalist, Lorelai and Luke’s ongoing marriage and the tragic death of Richard, leaving Emily a widow and facing an uncertain new chapter.
Directed by Bonni Cohen, the documentary is being produced by Sony Pictures Television’s This Machine in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television. HBO Max has yet to announce a release date.
