For years, viewers watched John burst heads and break bones on the big screen. The rich world of the film series gave birth to The Continental, a prequel series set in the 1970s that chronicled Winston’s rise in the world of John Wick. The series was a hit for Peacock, and the three-night event broke records for the streamer. A year after the show ended, questions about a second season have been floating around, questions series producer Basil Iwanyk addressed in an interview with The Direct. Iwanyk confirmed that The Continental will remain a limited series as it was initially marketed with no plans for a second season. The producer opened up about the conversations around Season 2 that took another turn, saying,
“I think we were happy with season one. I think that we talked a little bit about season two. But I think the feeling is, if we’re going to have something on television in the John Wick universe, this Robert Levine version that we went out with, that we’re negotiating with somebody, is probably the better option for the John Wick content in the TV world.
“So, I loved making [The Continental]. I love[d] the 70s of [it][. I loved Albert Hughes. Everything about it. I think it was a really cool, crazy idea for it. I think now we want to put together something that is going to inform more of what the future of the franchise is going to be, yeah.”
What’s Next for the ‘John Wick’ universe?
The universe continues with new development projects in different mediums. On the big screen, Ana de Armas takes the reign of the universe as she leads From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. Following the gritty setting of the John Wick movies, Ballerina occurs between the third and fourth movies. Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, and the late Lance Reddick are set to reprise their roles. On the small screen, John Wick: The High Table is an upcoming television series whose events follow the fourth movie. The series marks an inflection point for the universe as the order is toppled, and a fight for control ensues between old and new players.
The High Table is written by The Old Man co-creator Robert Levine, and Reeves and Chad Stahelski get an executive producer credit. The latter will direct the pilot episode. Given Iwanyk‘s comments about the abandoned Season 2 plans and the team’s pivot to The High Table, The Continental Season 2 does not seem to have a future.
