‘Sinners’ Scores Highest CinemaScore Ever for an Original R-Rated Horror Film!!

It’s extremely rare for a horror movie to earn the sort of reviews that director Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners has. But the film has defied the trends to emerge not only as Coogler‘s top-rated movie, but also the first R-rated horror movie to earn an A grade on CinemaScore. The polling platform tabulates how likely an audience member is to recommend a given movie to others, and usually, horror movies fare terribly. For instance, The Exorcism, starring Russell Crowe, earned a disastrous D grade according to CinemaScore.

Sinners‘ A grade echoes critical sentiment. The movie is now “certified fresh” on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, on the strength of a 98% critics’ approval rating. This makes it the best-rated film of Coogler‘s acclaimed career, which also includes the indie hit Fruitvale Station, the Rocky reboot Creed, and two big-budget Marvel movies – Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Sinners reunites the filmmaker with Michael B. Jordan, who broke out with a leading role in Fruitvale Station, and was catapulted to stardom thanks to Creed. Collider‘s Emma Kiely praised his performance in her review, writing, “If the Creed and Black Panther movies didn’t solidify Jordan as a bona fide action star, Sinners surely will.

The movie has also been “verified hot” on Rotten Tomatoes now, thanks to its 97% audience rating. Remarkably, Coogler‘s first three features all earned RT scores in the 90s. His lowest-rated directorial venture is Wakanda Forever, which was also “certified fresh” at 84%. As per CinemaScore, Wakanda Forever and Creed both earned A grades, while the first Black Panther earned a perfect A+. It ended up grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide, and became the first Marvel movie to score a Best Picture nod at the Oscars.

‘Sinners’ Is Exceeding Expectations in Its Box Office Debut

Sinners‘ A grade puts it above the A- earned by A Quiet Place: Part II and Five Nights at Freddy’s, both of which grossed around $300 million worldwide. It also beat out The Black Phone, A Quiet Place: Day One, Speak No Evil, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Scream, and Scream VI‘s B+ grades. Needless to say, a positive audience reception typically translates into greater box office returns. Sinners is already exceeding opening weekend projections, and is aiming for a $50 million haul across its first three days of release.
