From Oldboy to Burning, South Korea has proven that it has no problem delivering a quality revenge tale. In series format, this isn’t any different, and a new title is arriving to underscore that we want them to keep coming. Mercy For None is a new action K-drama that is debuting on Netflix next month, and it centers around a dangerous killer who returns to the underworld of crime after his brother is killed. The series is set to premiere on June 6, and you can check out the trailer in this article.
At this point, revenge and assassins’ stories immediately bring the John Wick franchise to mind. From the looks of it, though, Mercy For None will be able to stand out in the genre. The series has a pretty distinct nighttime look, and the protagonist Ki-jun seems to be as ruthless as he is skilled. In the story, Ki-jun has been away from the crime world for over a decade, and his brother was second-in-command of a criminal organization. The trailer hints that a deal was made for him and his brother to have a clean break, but apparently somebody didn’t keep their end of the deal.
Ki-jun is played by So Ji-seob, who is returning for an action story for the first time in thirteen years. He rose to prominence after starring in series like Law Firm, I’m Sorry I Love You, and Cain and Abel. He was recently in Disney+’s Doctor Lawyer and the whodunit Confession. The cast of Mercy For None also features Huh Joon-ho (Buried Hearts), Gong Myoung (Extreme Job), Choi Won-young (Past Lives), An Kil-kang (Tale of the Nine Tailed), Cho Han-cheul (Spring of Youth), Cha Seung-won (Night in Paradise), and Lee Jun-hyuk (Happiness).
What Is ‘Mercy For None’ Based On?
Mercy For None is based on a highly popular webtoon series that was originally published as Plaza Wars: Mercy For None and created by Oh Se-hyung and Kim Gyun-Tae. The webtoon was first published in 2020. You can currently check it out on the platform. Netflix defines the adaptation as “a gripping noir action series” and a “hardboiled drama.”
The new series is just another South Korean title that underscores the rich stories that hail from the country. Recently, Netflix brought to the platform celebrated movies and TV shows like Revelations — which partnered up Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) and Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) — The Great Flood, The Trauma Code: Heroes On Call, and the upcoming final season of Squid Game is already on the horizon.
Netflix debuts Mercy For None on June 6. You can check out the trailer above.
