James Gunn could be taking us to Themyscira sooner than expected. The DCU-head told Entertainment Weekly that a Wonder Woman movie is “being written right now.” He clarifies this is different from the Paradise Lost prequel series at HBO that will be about the Amazons of Themyscira. That project, Gunn says, is “slow moving, but it’s moving.” Gunn also tells Entertainment Weekly that Wonder Woman has not yet been cast. All this ahead of the release of the highly anticipated Superman movie from Gunn‘s DCU, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Gunn notes that in terms of looking to four of the bigger players in the DCU: Batman, Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman, “I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two.” The two being Superman and Supergirl, ahead of Superman‘s release and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow wrapping up filming earlier this year.
What Was the Last ‘Wonder Woman’ Incarnation?
2017’s Wonder Woman starred Gal Gadot as Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman. Gadot had previously starred in Zack Snyder‘s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 that saw Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman. Justice League, released in 2017, also featured the trio with addition of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. The Patty Jenkins-directed Wonder Woman would go on to have one sequel: Wonder Woman 1984 and a third would be scrapped. Jenkins said in 2022 “I was open to considering anything asked of me,” in terms of more Wonder Woman.
As for more from Diana Prince’s world, Gunn previously announced Paradise Lost in 2023. He said at the time, “It’s almost like Game of Thrones with Westeros but with all the inhabitants of Paradise Island.” The concept intriguing, with HBO already being home to the world of the Westeros. There’s still much up in the air, as Gunn says the project is “slow-moving.” He’s confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that not only has Wonder Woman not been cast in the DCU but neither has the universe’s Batman, reiterating that Robert Pattinson‘s Batman (along with Colin Farrell‘s Penguin) remains separate. “What Matt [Reeves]’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary,” says Gunn. “We’re supposed to see that script shortly, and I can’t wait.” That also means, according to Gunn, “there is no Justice League in this world… not yet.”
Superman releases July 11.
