‘Galaxy Quest’ Reboot Series Is Still a Go!!

Galaxy Quest is a fan favorite film that has captivated audiences since its release in 1999. The parody film explores the cast of a show which is a reference to Star Trek. And 2 years ago, there was an announcement that a show based on the series was getting ready to hit Paramount+. It was originally set to be a series that followed the events of the film but after the death of star Alan Rickman, the idea shifted. Now, it has been reported by Deadline that the series is still on their radar.

The larger report was about the future of their streaming slate. Which included shows that were currently airing, in development, and the future of each project. With Galaxy Quest, the idea is that it will stay put where it was originally designed to go, which was Paramount+ at the time. Deadline said that shows with talent attached, which included Galaxy Quest, were going to stay put. The original film had Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni and the film was the debut of actor Justin Long.

We don’t currently know which version of the series that Paramount+ and CBS is interested in given what was originally planned for the show. With the original idea, writer Robert Gordon, and director Dean Parisot from the film, were both tied to the new series. Then there were other options for the series with Paul Scheer writing one of them and another one from Star Trek alum Simon Pegg was set to take on his own Galaxy Quest take with Succession writer Georgia Pritchett.

A show like Galaxy Quest could work

The basis of the film is both a love letter to Star Trek as well as a commentary on how actors of this genre can act. Allen‘s Jason Nesmith was very much a commentary on how William Shatner engages with fans of the franchise as a whole. He is infamous for his reaction to Trekkies and so it is beautiful to see how Galaxy Quest engages with that. The new show has a lot of options in how to tackle the subject of the 1999 film. They could continue the story about the stars of the television show or it could be a recreation of the fictional series too, á la what The Orville did. But until we know more, at least it is still on Paramount’s radar?

In the meantime, you can watch Galaxy Quest and enjoy one of the best parody films of all time.
