Netflix and A24 are firing up the stoves for a new video game adaptation. However, in a surprising twist for the indie giant, it’s a reality competition. A24 has acquired the rights to Overcooked, the frantic cooperative cooking party game for 1-4 players, for an unscripted series that’s said to capture a similar family appeal to that of the streamer’s past such competitions like Nailed It! and Floor Is Lava. Currently, the show is in the early stages of development with Gemma Langford, Oli De-Vine, and Phil Duncan executive producing for the game’s developer, Ghost Town Games. This would mark A24‘s first attempt at a reality series.
For the uninitiated, Overcooked and its 2018 sequel cast players as colorful little chefs tasked with working together to prepare orders for incoming customers and keeping the kitchen running against the clock. Despite its simple controls, the game quickly descends into chaos as everyone scrambles to complete the various tasks around the kitchen, like chopping and cooking ingredients, cleaning plates, and more, to get food out before customers storm out. Adding to the challenge are obstacles that obstruct the players and make completing a dish all the more difficult, from something as simple as a counter keeping the chefs separated to pits of lava and even the vacuum of space. The reality series might not go that extreme with its hazards, but it’ll look to provide similar cooking challenges for its contestants that lean into the frantic nature of the games.
Both Overcooked games have been hailed as indie darlings for their focus on coordination and communication in the middle of pure kitchen chaos. They reward players based on speed, offering bonuses for quick orders and grading overall performance based on how many coins were earned through serving correct meals. The original installment earned two honors at the BAFTA Game Awards for best British game and family game, and was originally released on PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One before being ported to Nintendo Switch.
A24 Has Increasingly Delved Into Video Game Adaptations
While Netflix is no stranger to tackling video games, with hits like Castlevania, Arcane, and, more recently, Devil May Cry under its belt, A24 is newer to the idea. The indie giant made waves when it was announced that it would be adapting Hideo Kojima‘s Death Stranding into a film with Michael Sarnoski directing. Earlier this year, it further shocked the game world with the reveal of an Elden Ring movie, helmed by certified FromSoftware fan and regular A24 collaborator Alex Garland. Regarding the latter, the latest update came courtesy of producer Allan Ungar, who confirmed that development was still underway and moving in the right direction, particularly after the success of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. With Overcooked now on the way, it certainly seems like the prestigious indie banner is going to continue being a big player when it comes to game adaptations.
Overcooked is currently in development at A24 and Netflix.
